Since 2006, 88 countries around the world have been observing World Kidney Day on the second Thursday of March each year. This humanitarian initiative, led by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF), aims to raise awareness about kidney health and the importance of early prevention and management of kidney diseases.
This year, on March 14th, World Kidney Day carries the theme: “Kidney Health for Everyone – Fairness and Accessibility in Medical Practice and Hospital Care.”
In Bulgaria, between 700,000 and 800,000 people suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), though only 1 in 10 of them are diagnosed. Often, this condition is asymptomatic, and patients may not realize they have a problem. Major contributors to CKD today, especially post-COVID-19, are arterial hypertension and diabetes, with nearly 10% of the Bulgarian population undergoing treatment for diabetes.
Over the years, Varna Medical University Press has had the pleasure of publishing numerous textbooks, monographs, and guides on nephrology, aimed at improving the knowledge of students and medical professionals from other fields. Our team is thrilled to have the opportunity to help raise awareness about World Kidney Day. With the support of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dobrin Paskalev, we are pleased to present the flyers designed by Violeta Stoyanova, Galina Germanova (Department of Pharmacy Assistant), and Janeta Vracheva (Department of Medical Laboratory Technician), which were distributed today to spread awareness at the Nephrology Clinic at St. Marina University Hospital in Varna.
