As the holliday season approaches, Varna Medical University Press has decided to start revealing some of the gift book titles that we received as a response to our initiative called Give a book for Christmas. The first member of the academic staff of the Medical University of Varna who welcomed our request for book recommendations is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Desislava Vankova, one of the most cheerful lecturers at the Department of Social Medicine and Health Care Organization.
Here’s what she shared with our team:
Dear colleagues, congratulations on the wonderful idea! Here are some titles from my personal collection that I believe would make great Christmas gifts for any reader.
1) Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami. I got it myself as a present last Christmas! It’s a magical saga of love and loneliness. Murakami needs no introduction.
2) Be Water, My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee by Shannon Lee. A book that is both beautiful on the inside and out. The author is the daughter of Bruce Lee, who was a martial arts expert, a cultural icon, and a movie star. This self-help book is a philosophical invitation to look at our lives from a new angle and follow our authentic selves. A guide on how to become light, adaptable, and powerful like water.
3) Poets and Love. The book would make a boutique gift for connoisseurs. It contains poems by Bulgarian poets selected by Bulgarian actors. More information about the Poets initiative can be found here.
4) Ludwig van Beethoven. Pathography of Genius by Dobrin Paskalev, Bistra Galunska, and Diana Petkova. This is my favorite academic book, published by Varna Medical University Press in 2021. Its cover is unique!
Of course, selecting a book as a present is always quite individual, depending on the type of reader. My list of books is probably not everyone’s cup of tea. But I hope that they will find the right audience to enjoy and appreciate them.
One of the best places to be during the hollidays is between the pages of a beautiful book! Merry Christmas!
